#14 "The Point"

This area is undoubtedly one of the prettiest as well as the most historic in the camp. Here on July 17, 1927 Scouts and dignitaries gathered to dedicate Camp Massasoit as a Scout camp. Here stood for many years the old pagoda which doubled as a church and a shelter for picnicing parents. Close by stood the original camp assembly area and flag pole. When the flag was lowered in the evenings a small cannon was shot off. On one occasion the cannon was "accidently" loaded with buckshot and a few of the neighboring trees were devested of their leaves! You can still see the foundation of the old boathouse which formerly marked the shorewood end of a rather rickety fish pier where many new Scouts "accidently" walked off clothes and all. Old-timers say that there may be something hidden in the big rock close to where the chapel now stands. The all-faith chapel was erected in 1956 through the generosity of the Quincy Rotary Club. In the late 1980's the chapel was enclosed to make it a year round building and now houses Nature and a small camp museum.
